After spending a morning submerged in hot springs with snow lightly falling on our heads, we retired for lunch into the onsen’s traditional tea room. And for the first time, we removed our shoes and slid quietly onto the tatami.
We came home and tried to buy tatami for ourselves. We could not. We had to find it in Japan and ship it back. We had customs problems. It cost a lot of time and money.
We started tatami.us to bring tatami to the United States.
Our tatami is made by the hands of third-generation Japanese craftsmen in our workshop in Fukuyama. They’ve been making tatami for 80 years.
All of our tatami is made in Japan.
